A New Home for DDHR

Strong HallWelcome to the third annual newsletter of UT Department of Anthropology’s Disasters, Displacement, and Human Rights program!

We began the 2017-2018 academic year in our new home in Strong Hall. The DDHR program now has its own space – a state-of-the art seminar room complete with remote teleconferencing abilities and a view of the Smoky Mountains. We plan to make great use of our new facilities.

We are also in the midst of planning the next biennial conference, “Transitions: Crisis, Uncertainty, Opportunity,” scheduled for February 9-11, 2018. Read more about the conference and deadline for papers in the feature story in our newsletter.

Finally, we welcomed our new department head, Professor Alex Bentley, whose enthusiasm for the program is especially encouraging.

The world we live in is rife with disasters, mass displacement, and human rights violations. We have much work to do. This newsletter provides a glimpse into how UT anthropologists roll up their sleeves and get down to it.
