Alex Bentley
Professor | Anthropological Archaeology
Professor Bentley researches cultural evolution and social change from the ancient past to the present. Within this, the topics range from Neolithic kinship and prehistoric disease to contemporary behavioral change related to health and sustainability, to the pace of innovation in science. Much of the research involves computational social science—visualization and modeling to find patterns in human behavioral data.
Bentley teaches classes in the archaeology of Europe and Asia, computational social science, biology and society (medical anthropology) and data science. For the College of Arts and Sciences, Bentley is the director of the new interdisciplinary program in Computational Social Science and director of the Center for the Dynamics of Social Complexity. His new book, on the evolution of technology, is forthcoming with Roman and Littlefield Press (2025).
